How to merge PDF files online without leaving copies behind

Combine several PDFs into one in the right order, and understand what happens to your files when you use an online PDF merger.

· 5 min read

Merging PDFs is one of the most common document chores: an invoice plus its receipts, a contract plus its annexes, a set of scanned pages that arrived as separate files. Online tools make it quick, but many people worry about where their documents end up. This guide covers both: how to merge cleanly, and how to choose a tool that does not keep your files.

Merge PDFs in the right order

  1. Open Merge PDF and drop in 2 to 20 PDF files (up to 10 MB each).
  2. Use the arrows to put the files in the order you want. The first file becomes the first pages.
  3. Click Process and download merged.pdf.

All pages are copied as they are, so text stays selectable and links keep working. Page sizes are kept too, so a landscape annex stays landscape.

What happens to your files?

Many free PDF sites upload your documents to storage and delete them "after a few hours". That means a copy of your contract or bank statement sits on someone else's server for a while. DocuTools works differently: files are processed in memory and the result is sent straight back in the same request. Nothing is written to disk and nothing is kept afterwards. You can read the details on our security page.

Clean up after merging

  • Remove blank or duplicate pages with Delete PDF Pages.
  • Add page numbers to the combined document with Add Page Numbers, so people can refer to "page 7".
  • Rotate any scanned page that came in sideways with Rotate PDF.

Merge, number and stamp in one go

If you send the same kind of document often, a workflow can merge the files, add page numbers and finish with a verification stamp, all in a single job. You only pay for the steps if every step succeeds.

Password-protected PDFs cannot be merged. Remove the password in your PDF reader first, then merge.
