How to convert a PDF to Word so you can edit it

Turn a PDF into an editable DOCX. What converts well, what does not, and what to do with scanned PDFs.

· 4 min read

You received a contract or a report as PDF and need to change a few lines. Retyping is slow. Converting to Word gives you an editable document in seconds, as long as you know what to expect.

Convert in 3 steps

  1. Open PDF to Word and upload the PDF (up to 50 pages).
  2. Click Process.
  3. Open the DOCX in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice and edit.

What converts well, and what does not

  • Letters, contracts and reports with mostly text convert well.
  • Brochures, forms and multi-column layouts may shift, because a PDF stores the position of every word rather than paragraphs. Expect some tidying up.
  • Scanned PDFs are pictures of text. Run OCR PDF first so the text can be recognised, then convert.

If you only need to copy a few sentences, OCR alone may be enough: the result is a PDF you can search and copy from.
