How to add page numbers to a PDF

Number the pages of a merged report, contract or thesis in seconds, choose where the numbers go and where counting starts.

Page numbers make long documents easy to discuss: "see page 14" beats "somewhere after the second table". They are also often required for contracts, tenders and theses. If your PDF came from several sources or a scanner, it probably has none, or numbering that restarts in every section.

Add page numbers in 3 steps

  1. Open Add Page Numbers and upload your PDF.
  2. Choose the position: bottom centre or bottom right.
  3. Set the starting number and click Process.

Starting from a different number

If your document has a cover page that should not count, there are two options. Start numbering at 0 so the cover becomes page 0 and the first real page is 1, or remove the cover with Delete PDF Pages, number the rest, and merge the cover back in front.

Merge first, then number

When you combine several files, always number after merging so the numbering runs continuously. A workflow can do both in one click: merge, add page numbers, and stamp the final file if you need to prove it was not changed.

Numbers are added on top of each page, so text and links in your PDF stay as they are.
